Sex in the water: it seems so romantic and exciting, but in real life, it’s often disappointing. It’s actually quite awkward, unhygienic, and uncomfortable! Sorry to burst your bubble. In this article, we share the 5 biggest inconveniences of underwater sex.

1. Water is not a lubricant

You might think that water is an excellent lubricant. However, nothing could be further from the truth! Water washes away your natural lubricants, which only creates extra friction down there. Water is anything but a lubricant.

Tip! A silicone-based lubricant is the best option for sex in the water. This type of lubricant doesn’t wash away as quickly as a water-based lubricant.

2. Extra friction can cause abrasions

The lack of lubricant can cause problems during underwater penetration. And, if the vagina is not moist enough, there’s simply too much friction, that means both of you can get abrasions! When you wear a condom during sex in or near the water, the friction can also cause the condom to tear more easily.

3. It’s not always hygienic

You probably won’t catch a life-threatening virus, but water can contain nasty bacteria, such as E. coli and salmonella. This applies to swimming pools and hot tubs with incorrect pH values, but also to outdoor pools, lakes, and even the sea. If you have sex in the water, there’s a chance that the bacteria from the water could get inside the vagina.

4. You’re more likely to get a yeast infection

Having sex in any kind of water can increase the risk of a yeast infection. Chlorine is particularly troublesome, as it can irritate your vagina and disturb the pH level down there. And anything that disturbs the pH level of your vagina can lead to a yeast infection.

5. It’s easier to contract STDs

Sex in the water can increase the risk of an STD or an unwanted pregnancy. Of course, the water doesn’t wash away any STDs. In addition, wearing a condom underwater can cause quite a few problems. So think twice before chatting up a fling in the pool 😉
