This is how you shave your pubes without irritating your skin

Anyone who has ever shaved their pubic hair will know that it’s a whole different kettle of fish compared to shaving your armpits or legs. We’ve all experienced it before: ingrown hairs, itchy bumps, and razor burn. What can you do to prevent that? With our 12 tips, shaving your pubic hair will become less of a nightmare!

1. First, trim any long hair

Have you developed quite a thatch of hair down there? Make sure your razor doesn’t ‘snag’. By trimming your pubes beforehand, you can prevent snagging and ensure that the razor glides smoothly over your skin. This will prevent wear and tear on your hair follicles – and your razor. Don’t trim too close to the skin; you don’t want to cut off any more than you need to!

2. Shave under the shower or in the bath

Warm water softens the hair and relaxes the skin. Warm water also causes the pores in your skin to open up, keeping them clean (and preventing infections) as well as allowing you to trim your hair down to the roots. Don’t immediately go for the razor as soon as you jump into the shower. Give your skin time to get used to the heat and open up.

3. Use the right razor

Use razors that are specifically designed for the pubic area. Razors for men are also a good option, as they are designed for thicker facial hair and sensitive skin. Above all: don’t be too stingy when purchasing your razor. Cheaper razors are often of poor quality, something you want to avoid with your delicate parts down there!

4. Use a new razor

Use disposable razors only once to prevent skin irritation. Bacteria hides between the razor blades and can cause infections and irritation during your next shave. Is buying a new razor every time too expensive for you? Use one razor for just your pubic area, one for just your armpits, and one for your legs. Three different razors, in other words! This prevents certain types of bacteria from ending up in places where they have no business being.

5. Scrub your pubic area

Scrub your pubic area to remove dead skin cells. This will prevent your pores from clogging up and lead to fewer ingrown hairs! You can choose whatever scrub you like. Plenty of people swear by brown sugar as a scrub. Brown sugar doesn’t burn and is soft on the skin.

6. Use shaving cream

With shaving cream, the razor glides easily over the skin, reducing skin irritation. Suffering from razor burn? Shaving without cream is probably the main reason! Many people think that water is smooth on the skin, but water is actually quite abrasive. If you don’t believe us, try having sex under the shower. Use unscented shaving cream, give it time to soak into the skin, and shave away!

Careful! Don’t use shampoo as a shaving cream because shampoo dehydrates the skin.

7. Pull your skin taut before shaving

Your pubic area is not flat: it is all hills and valleys. Shaving is easier when you pull the skin in your pubic area taut so the razor can smoothly glide over the skin. The hair is then trimmed as close to the root as possible. Moreover, it’s a great way to prevent all those nasty nicks and cuts!

8. Shave slowly

You want to pass over the same spot as little as possible; the more often you shave the same area, the worse the skin irritation gets. So, take it slow and try to get most of the hair on the first pass. You’ll also notice that if you shave your pubic area two days in a row, your skin irritation will rise to a whole new level of discomfort. Wait a couple of days before your next shave and slowly decrease the intervals between shaves. This will allow your pubic area to get used to your shaving ritual.

9. Follow-up care for your shaved pubic area

The follow-up care starts as soon as you step out of the shower. Don’t rub your pubic area dry, that will only irritate the skin. That dry towel acts like sandpaper on your delicate, naked skin. Carefully pat the shaved area dry. You can apply a little bit of baby oil or pure aloe vera to the skin for extra care. Aloe vera or baby oil keeps your skin smooth and helps combat itchiness and pain. You can apply a thin layer of a similar type of cream twice a day and let it soak in. You’ll find that you end up with a silky smooth pubic area!

10. Massage your pubic area

A good massage helps dislodge any potential ingrown hairs. Place your fingers on both sides of your pubic area and make circular motions with your fingers. Move your right and left hand in opposite directions. Shift your fingers a little bit each time so you cover the entire area. You can also use a soft brush for the massage.

11. Wear the right underwear

That tight lacy thong may look fabulous, but it’s not exactly ideal for your recently shaved pubic area. Be particularly careful with synthetic fabrics. Satin – and silk – block moisture, which means that sweat and other body fluids have no place to go. Choose a pair of cotton knickers that fit comfortably instead to give your private parts some breathing room.

12. Shaving? Don’t you mean waxing and depilating?

Many men and women shudder at the thought: waxing or depilating. But if you really want to be rid of all the hassle that comes with shaving, or if you just want to have a longer-lasting result, these two methods are still the best options! If you do ultimately decide to go down this route, don’t despair! Although it may be painful in the beginning, it really does get better after a while. Honest!
