Vaginal dryness? The best tips for a dry vagina

Itchiness, a burning sensation, pain, and even blood loss. If you’ve ever had to deal with vaginal dryness, these symptoms might sound familiar to you. But what can you do about it? Luckily there are plenty of solutions to help deal with these issues, and we have a few useful tips to combat vaginal dryness!

Use lubricants

Lubricants are good, body-friendly gels that can help keep your vagina wet. Using lubricants can be very pleasant, especially before and during sex. Try to pick a water-based lubricant as these are the ones that resemble your body’s own fluids the most. Apply some both inside and outside of your vagina. Vaginal douche and lubricants

If the lubricant doesn’t reach deep enough on its own, you can try using a vaginal douche. The douche is a small pump in which you can put the lubricant. You insert the nozzle, after which you squeeze the pump to apply the gel. In case of vaginal dryness, you can also use lubricants when you’re not having intercourse. This way you can go for a run, bike ride or exercise without any discomfort!

Longer foreplay

This tip is only applicable when you want to have sex. In general, the female body needs time to get aroused and to make vaginal fluids. The longer your foreplay sessions lasts, the more time your vagina has to get wet.

You don’t have to rely on fingering alone. In fact, sometimes, the fluids created during this act get wiped away. You could try some hot sex talk, a mini vibrator, or oral sex to get aroused. You could also try an erotic massage. There is, of course, no time limit on foreplay. Go on for as long as you need to get truly aroused. You can discuss this with your partner. Relaxing also helps in the bedroom. If you’re afraid your vagina won’t make enough fluids during sex or that sex will be painful for you, chances are this will end up actually happening. The tension and stress can also cause the muscles in and around your vagina to tighten, making sex more painful. Try to conquer your fears, and you’ll notice that the sex will start to feel a lot better than before. You could also try slow tantric sex.

Avoid certain products

Certain products affect the amount of fluid and sometimes even the pH value (acidity) in your vagina. This is not only unpleasant for you but can also give bacteria free rein in your private realm, which could lead to yeast infections. Some examples of these products are healthcare products meant specifically for your vagina, tampons, and even soaps.

Soap disturbs your pH value and can even cause the mucous membranes in your vagina to dry out, and tampons can easily absorb a lot of your natural fluids, so only use them when dealing with heavy menstruation. Lastly, we want to warn you about vaginal soap. This healthcare product specifically designed to clean your vagina can be found everywhere: at the pharmacist and even in the supermarket. Don’t bother with this product. Soap is still soap. Instead, simply clean your vagina with tepid or warm water. That is more than enough!

Stay sexually active

You could look at your vagina as if it’s a tiny motor. If you don’t occasionally use it, the oil will dry up, and some parts will become rusty. In other words: “use it or lose it“. If you’re sexually active, your body is more familiar with the feeling of arousal and making vaginal fluids.

However, this doesn’t mean you need to have sex every day or that you should do so if you don’t want to. You could try to slowly increase the number of times you are sexually active over time. Also, your partner doesn’t always have to be involved. A solo session with just you and your fingers can be enough to get your vagina back in the groove. Go see a doctor

If you’ve already tried a lot of solutions, but nothing seems to work, it might be time to visit your doctor. There could be a simple explanation; reduced oestrogen levels, for example, something women in menopause especially have to deal with. If that’s the case, the doctor can help you by prescribing an oestrogen cream or pills, for example.

But even when something else is going on, your doctor will likely be able to help you find out what it is. You can keep on worrying, but why would you when the doctor can determine with a simple conversation or smear test why you’re experiencing vaginal dryness?
