“Will my vagina tighten if I have less sex?”

tighter vagina

Many men seem to want a woman with a tight vagina. While I have no idea what the situation is with my own vagina, I was wondering if I could make my vagina tighter and if having less sex plays an important role in this. Especially now that I’ve been having less sex for some time, I’m curious whether that has any effect.

Dear Sascha,

Let’s start straight by saying that the vagina cannot shrink. Neither can a vagina be ‘stretched’ by having lots of sex or even by having sex with a man who is above average in size.

The myth of a tight vagina

The vagina itself cannot become tighter or wider. In fact, the vagina naturally has the ability to become moister, deeper, and wider when aroused. This is how the vagina prepares for penetration. This is also called the ‘tent effect’. After penetration, however, the vagina will return to its former state.

Did you know that… the vagina returns to its original state even after childbirth?

Effects on the pelvic floor muscles

In part, the tightness of the vagina is simply due to nature. Some women have a ‘narrower’ or less deep vagina than others.
Whether or not a vagina feels ‘tight’ also has a lot to do with the surrounding pelvic floor muscles. This muscle group is responsible for holding the organs in the pelvis in place, including the uterus, bowel, and bladder.

“The pelvic floor muscles play an important role in whether the vagina feels ‘tight’ or not.”

For example, we naturally tighten our pelvic floor muscles when we hold back urine. The tightening of this muscle group also ensures whether the vaginal opening is closed or not (completely). Strong pelvic floor muscles can therefore lead to a narrower vaginal opening, which makes the vagina feel tighter.

Exercising for your vagina

Kegel exercises

The vagina does not become more or less tight from the amount of sex you have. However, you can train the vagina by doing exercises for the pelvic floor muscles: Kegel exercises. This can be effective both for women who are too tight and for those who’d like to have more powerful pelvic floor muscles. It can also be used to help with sexual problems such as vaginismus, difficulty orgasming, or climaxing too quickly.

Using vagina balls

An extra tool to help you learn more about contracting and relaxing your pelvic floor muscles, and make them stronger, are vaginal balls. These balls can be inserted vaginally. By tightening the pelvic floor muscles, you keep the balls in place. There are even vaginal balls available with extra weight, which are even more of a challenge to keep inside. This will give your pelvic floor muscles an extra workout.
